Medical use of cannabis

What is medical grade cannabis?

Medical cannabis is cannabis grown under controlled standards. There will be records and inspections in order to prevent the risk of consumption of flowers that are below standard, such as those containing heavy metals, pesticides, or fungi, which might be life-threatening in cases of large quantity intakes. In addition, medical cannabis requires the monitoring of the concentration of active substances in the inflorescences, to affirm that the users receive the correct dose of medicinal essences. Strictness in every production process makes medical cannabis highly safe to consume.

How many strains of cannabis are there?

Cannabis belongs to the family of Cannabaceae. There are three common species: Sativa (Cannabis sativa), Indica (Cannabis indica) and Ruderalis (Cannabis ruderalis). The term “Marijuana” is a slang that refers to the buds of cannabis plant used for smoking.

Sativa (Cannabis sativa)

The name comes from Latin, meaning ‘to cultivate’, given by Carolus Linnæus (or Linnaeus), a Swedish botanist. This plant family was classified in 1753 (1753) and has its origin around the equator, such as Colombia and Mexico (America), Central Africa and Southeast Asia.

Sativa has thick stems.

The height when fully grown is up to six meters. The leaves are long, slender, light green (compared to Indica). The growth period until ready for harvest is 9-16 weeks. The Sativa prefers sunlight and hot weather. It contains THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) that has a higher stimulating effect (psychoactive) than that from Indica.

Indica (Cannabis indica)

Discovered and named by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, a French military biologist who published knowledge about this strain of cannabis in 1785, the Indica got its name from the places of origin, which are India and the Middle East. Indica has a low, bushy stem, with a full-grown height of only 180 centimeters. The leaves are broad, short, dark green (compared to sativa), and the branches are thick and bushy. The growth time for harvesting is up to 6-8 weeks. The Indica prefers shady and cool surroundings. It contains CBD (Cannabidiol), which acts as a sedative, causing muscles to relax and reducing chronic pain.

Ruderalis (Cannabis ruderalis)

The first person to publish about this strain of cannabis was the Russian botanist D. E. Janischewsky in 1924. This cannabis variation is originated in the central and eastern areas of Europe.

Ruderalis has the shortest stem of the three species. It resembles a weed, with broad leaves that contain only three leaflets. It grows quickly and can survive both hot and cold weather. Although the amount of THC in Ruderalis is comparatively lower than the other two species, the Ruderalis variation is high in CBD. It was usually crossed with Sativa and Indica in order to obtain hybrids with particular medicinal properties.

How is medical cannabis used?

The use of medical cannabis can be divided into three types:

  1. Inhalation of vapors: this can be used through burning and inhaling the smoke into the lungs, or using a vaporizer to evaporate the important substances while not burning them.
  2. Eating: this takes time to be absorbed into the bloodstream along with fat. It might take more than 1.5 hours to absorb. The important substances can be felt for a longer time, even up to eight hours.
  3. Absorption through the skin: this can be used through applying of oil or various cosmetics, or in form of a sticking patch, to absorb the substances slowly through the skin. While all parts of cannabis – flowers, leaves, stems, and roots – can be of medical use, Iridescent only produces flowers and stems.

Cannabis Vs Hemp

Although both are sometimes used interchangeably, have the same place of origin and belong to the same plant family – the Cannabaceae, marijuana and hemp actually differ. Cannabis has small, narrow, long, dark green leaves with 5-7 leaflets and short, bushy trunk. Hemp leaves, on the other hand, are large, arranged far apart, with light green color and 7-11 leaflets. The trunk is tall and slender.

Cannabis and hemp have different benefits. Cannabis contains THC and CBD, which can be extracted as medicine. Hemp, on the other hand, is high in fiber, which are processed for use in textiles. It contains CBD that can be processed into medicines such as pain relievers, anti-epileptic drugs, etc.

Opportunities for Exporting Medical Cannabis

Medical cannabis export requires the standards of herbs for medicinal use or production of drugs. Currently in Thailand, medical cannabis is still a government-controlled product as it has just been released from being a narcotic drug very recently. Depending on which country being exported to, import permission must be granted, and the importer must also have a license. Some countries still do not allow the import of flowers with a THC content of more than 0.2%, while other countries allow the THC content of less than 1%, or permit only hemp flowers. Therefore, countries where cannabis is legal can be categorized into six groups as follows:

1. Group of countries that legalize the use of cannabis for both recreational and medical purposes; that is, they can all be legally consumed or used for treatment:
